The Ministry of Education is pleased to announce that three senior school students and an Education Officer

have been chosen and are representing Bermuda at the United States Scholar-Athlete Games in Rhode Island.

Sponsored by the Institute for International Sport and the Ministry of Education, recipients of the 23rd Denton

Hurdle Memorial Award, Nyisha Saunders from Berkeley Institute and Mikkail Crockwell, from The Berkeley

Institute along with runner up, Jasmin Brunson from the Bermuda High School for Girls and Acting Education

Officer for Physical Education and Health, Mr. Darrin Lewis are attending the 2008 United States Scholar-

Athlete Games, organized and hosted by the Institute for International Sport.

Hailed by past participants, sponsors and the news media as “one of the finest youth sports/cultural events in

the world,” the 2008 United States Scholar-Athlete Games, organized and hosted by the Institute for

International Sport, will feature an extraordinary assembly of the nation’s best and brightest high school

athletes and artists who will gather for week-long competitions and educational symposia, June 28th to July

5th, on the campus of the University of Rhode Island.

The U.S. Scholar-Athlete Games are unique in that they combine athletic, cultural and educational activities at

one site, at one time, with the overarching goal of helping the young participants - ages 15 to 19 - learn about

the principles of good sportsmanship and ethics, develop leadership skills, and gain greater understanding and

respect for multiple cultures and people. For many past participants, the Games have been a truly life-changing

experience.

In addition, the Bermuda representatives have been invited by the Hon. K. H. Randolph Horton, Minister of

Education, to attend his induction ceremony to be held on Wednesday, July 2nd during the Institute’s acclaimed

United States Scholar-Athlete Games at the University of Rhode Island. Minister Horton will be inducted into

the International Scholar-Athlete Hall of Fame and is scheduled to address the 1,000 scholar-athletes and

scholar-artists.

The Bermuda representatives are due to return home on Saturday, July 5th, 2008.
