SWBAT

  • Students will be able to identify informational text features and structure and explain how the features contribute to a better understanding of the text.
  • Students will be able to use context clues to determine the meanings of unfamiliar words
  • Practice the skill of skimming and scanning.

 

Why is it important to know the features of an informational text? How do the features add to the text?

 

Success Criteria:

I can use reading strategies when skimming and scanning a text

I can identify informational text features and structure of a text

II can use context clues to determine unknown vocabulary in a text.

Formative

Summative Assessment:

Observation, check-ins, oral questioning and quizzes.

Writing response, letter writing, comprehension and vocabulary.

Instructional Strategies:

Introduce and discuss, Explicit instructions, Individualized Instruction, Direct Instruction, Model, Providing immediate feedback, Illicit high order oral thinking questions.

Resource Materials:

Power point, YouTube, Informational text, newspaper, text features, vocabulary list, getepic.com, and liveworksheets.

Enrichment:

Choose a newspaper article and highlight the features.  

Accommodation

Differentiation:

 

 

Allow for extra time to write notes, read and answer questions.  

Visual handouts, power point notes, and assist students in keeping the idea that they are evaluating the texts as they read.
